Rough Magic

Artist Development

ADVANCE

Rough Magic is currently piloting ADVANCE, a new development initiative designed to give established artists the opportunity to expand their knowledge and broaden their artistic horizons through a structured programme.

Funded by the Arts Council’s Theatre Development Funding Scheme, ADVANCE is being developed through 2011 to conclude in March 2012.

The aim of ADVANCE is to give established theatre-makers the opportunity to develop, gain new insights and expand their knowledge and perception of their art form.

The programme is open to all theatre artists over 35 who have worked at a professional level for at least ten years, and who have a proven track record and significant status. For the purpose of this programme, “theatre artist” is an individual who works primarily as a professional artist in a creative, technical and/or managerial capacity within a theatre context.

ADVANCE is tailored to the needs of the individual participants. It is particularly designed to support the freelance theatre artist through a series of international visits to see shows and meet the individuals and companies behind the work. Some of these run in tandem with the SEEDS international research trips.

The programme for the year takes into account specific interests of the participants and Rough Magic suggests and manages individual initiatives. These range from attendance at conferences or workshops focused on specific skills to meetings with outstanding international theatre-makers. The programme is part-time and the work commitments of the participants are taken into account. All costs associated with participation in ADVANCE are covered by the company.
