Rough Magic Theatre Company – New Irish Plays and Adaptations 2010-2018.

We are excited to announce the publication by Methuen of Rough Magic Theatre Company – New Irish Plays and Adaptations 2010-2018.

Edited and with an introduction by Patrick Lonergan, Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at NUI Galway, with a foreword from Booker Prize-winning novelist Anne Enright – this book is an exciting snapshot of contemporary Irish playwriting commissioned, and produced, by Rough Magic over the last decade.

The anthology comprises five plays by established and emerging playwrights:

Phaedra by Hilary Fannin and Ellen Cranitch
Peer Gynt by Arthur Riordan
The House Keeper by Morna Regan
How to Keep an Alien by Sonya Kelly
Melt by Shane Mac an Bhaird

The selection includes vibrant new adaptations of world classics  Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and Racine’s Phaedra –  alongside vital new dramas that explore issues of urgent contemporary concern, such as sex and sexuality, emigration and climate change. Each play is prefaced by an introductory essay by the playwright.
