A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

By Arthur Riordan | Based on the book by James Joyce

2018

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: Rough Magic presents the world premiere of James Joyce’s seminal novel in Arthur Riordan’s vibrant new stage adaptation.

The spiritual rebellion of Stephen Dedalus and his restless search for artistic self-expression will be brought to life by Rough Magic’s dynamic creative ensemble of actors and designers under Ronan Phelan’s direction. They take us on a thrilling theatrical odyssey towards the liberation of the soul and its rejection of the stifling oppression of faith and fatherland.

Written in the crucible of the political and artistic explosion of the early twentieth century, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is essentially the story of Joyce, Ireland’s great re-inventor and architect of the English language.

Performed in Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire as part of Dublin Theatre Festival 2018. Then on a nationwide tour of Ireland.
