About The Company

Rough Magic Theatre Company was founded in 1984 and has established itself as one of  the leading independent theatre companies in Ireland. Based in Dublin, the company regularly performs at Project Arts Centre and tours its work in Ireland, the UK and beyond.

Under the leadership of Lynne Parker, Artistic Director and co-founder of Rough Magic, the company has in recent years become a major force in Irish Theatre, winning the Irish Theatre Award for Best Production four times in six years (Copenhagen 2002, Improbable Frequency 2004, The Taming of the Shrew 2006, Don Carlos 2007). In Edinburgh, the company has won two Fringe First awards (Midden 2001, Take me Away 2004). The company’s accolades and critical acclaim are matched by popular success and high box office sales.

The company is committed to developing and producing new Irish work for the stage, commissioned from leading playwrights and theatre artists.  Rough Magic presents the best of contemporary international writing and innovative productions from the classical repertoire.  The wide ranging work to date includes over 40 Irish premieres and the professional debuts of many Irish writers.

The company is also committed to the on-going professional development of the artists with whom it works and fosters new theatre artists by means of a strategic development inititative, known as the AIB SEEDS Programme.

Rough Magic is a non-profit company and is funded by the Arts Council, Dublin City Council and Culture Ireland. The company is also supported by its Corporate Partner, AIB, and many individual patrons.
